Developer Kit for Automatic Shifting, e-Bikes and Other Applications

If you are a manufacturer or someone who builds electric, gas-powered or pedal-assist vehicles as a hobby, kick-start your next generation design with a NuVinci® Developer Kit from Fallbrook. The Developers Kit can provide significant increases in various performance measures (see the Datasheet and the CVP White Paper links below). The Developer Kit provides what you need to speed design and accelerate development of a vehicle with the revolutionary performance of a NuVinci CVP drivetrain. Application possibilities exist for light electric vehicles, gas-powered vehicles, human-powered vehicles and hybrid vehicles such as pedal-assist electric bicycles.

Developer Kits are now available.  The price is US $595 plus applicable shipping, taxes and duties.

The kit includes:

NuVinci Continuously Variable Planetary (CVP) Transmission (silver color with 36 spoke holes)   Speed Sensor and Integrated Wiring Harness
Electronic Shift Controller with 32-bit Microprocessor (operates on 12-48VDC)   NuVinci Desktop™ Application and USB Connection Cable
Electronic Shift Actuator with integrated Position Encoder   Detailed Instructions and Mounting Hardware

Info ball For more details and specifications, see below and the Developer Kit Datasheet.
The User Manual is also available.

NuVinci CVPs with different specifications can be designed for production applications.  The information below applies to the Developer Kit.

System Electrical Requirements
System Voltage Range   12 to 48 Volts, DC
  System Current   5 Amps, maximum
The electronic components of the NuVinci CVP Developer Kit are designed to operate on a wide range of system voltages, and can be powered by a battery system or a power supply

Ratio Range & Installation Configuration
NuVinci CVP Ratio Range   350% (nominal)
Torque direction (facing the drive side)   Clockwise only (freewheels in reverse
Frame / Swingarm Dropout Width   135 mm (5.32 in, standard bicycle)
Orientation of NuVinci CVP   Main Shaft Horizontal to Ground
NuVinci CVP Input Sprocket   Not Included, ISO 24 x 1.375 TPI standard interface
The NuVinci CVP transmission nominal Speed Ratio range is from 0.5 (underdrive) to 1.75 (overdrive).  The product is designed to fit horizontally into a standard 135mm dropout width bicycle-style frame or swingarm.  Torque is transferred in one direction only, and because of wide application differences, no CVP input sprocket is included.

Torque, Power, and Speed Limits*

  Maximum Sustained (Pulse-free) Input Torque   65 Nm (48 lb-ft)
Maximum Instantaneous (Spike) Input Torque   130 Nm (96 lb-ft)
Maximum Sustained Input Power   5 kW (7 hp)
Maximum Recommended CVP Speed   Input: 1000 RPM / Output: 1000 RPM
*Operation at these limits is not recommended for extended durations, and durability is highly dependent on duty cycle.  Higher RPM, torque and power configurations can be designed for production applications.

Computer Operating System and Software Recommendations

PC Operating System, Hardware   Microsoft Windows XP or Vista
  Recommended Software   Microsoft Excel
Configuration and Shift Tables can be edited with a general text editor program (such as Notepad), but a powerful Microsoft Excel template is also included with the software to ease this task (called the NuVinci Configuration Editor).
